Critiquing Photographs

Descriptive:  This photo was taken by Alasdair McLellan for the Marc Jacobs perfume campaign. This photo shows the product that the designer is selling to his customers. The photograph shows the perfume bottle making it the subject and showing exactly what the consumers are buying.

Explanatory:  This photo was taken by Laurent Cipriani. This photo was taken after the Nice, France terroist attack in 2016. This photo shows the grief that the people are feeling due to the traumatic experience that they just witnessed. The artwork on the ground is honoring anyone that lost their lives that day in Nice.

Interpretative: This is a photo I took. Due to the pandemic, people have had to wear mask to protect others. The girl in the background is in a grocery story and she is standing behind food. This can be interpreted in two was: 1 being that she can afford food and 2 her only being able to be around it but cannot buy it. This shows the economic struggles that people are going threw during this hard time.

Aesthetically Evaluative: This is a photo I took. It shows the landscape of the area. It also show reference of what people used in previous times. There is a watermill that people used. It shows the contemporary landscape now but references to the past.

Ethically Evaluative: This is a photo I took. This photo shows a man working in a store. It also shows signs and representations of Covid-19 guidelines. During this pandemic many people are working to afford a living. This is also taken in a small business and many small businesses closed during the pandemic. This shows  issues in the economy system.

Theoretical: This picture was taken by Jessica Ledwich. This pictures shows the body parts that women want fixed to look more beautiful. As this can be seen as an ethically evaluative photo but in my eyes it is seen as theoretical. Beauty is different in every country. People create a theory of what is beautiful and portray it to other but it constantly changes.

Assignment 4

Presentation Synopsis:
For my presentation, I have chosen to interpret the work of Steve McCurry. He is an American photographer, freelancer, and photojournalist. His work has been in National Geographic, in many different galleries all over the world and sell books and fine prints. Much of his works consist of interpretative but also has explanatory photos  and aesthetically evaluative photographs of nature. Steve McCurry has photographed in a variety of places, but focuses mainly Asia and the Middle East One characteristic of his photography capture the culture of country that he is photographing. He has the ability to  captures the essence of human struggle and joy. The images I have chosen to review show the range of his work which include a portrait, a scenic explanatory photo and Joy through human experience.

New Perceptions of Photography:
Jim Richardson’s work helped to show me how to understand culture through photography. This has been an area that I’ve been very interested in because when I visit a place I like to learn about the culture around me. It is wonderful to see how a professional captures the world around us. His work also changed my perception by showing the wide range of photographers. He takes risks to achieve the image that he wants the views to see. He allows his photos to create an emotion to the person viewing them and make them think or understand what is going on. McCurry has shown me that instead of taking a photo that is just pretty, it is capable to take a beautiful photo with a meaning to them. He captures the beauty of humanity and nature portraying an emotion with each image. It really showed me that the range of a photographer is endless.
